August 17, 2014

1st District Veteran Services Seminar

Post 202 along with 1st District Posts 86, 126 and 303, hosted a Veteran Services Seminar @ Farwell Recreation Center in Detroit, MI.  There are close to 60,000 Veterans who call Detroit Home.  That is the largest concentration of Veterans in  any city in the state of Michigan.  Many of them are not aware of the benefits that they have earned through the honorable service they provided this nation during their years in the United States Armed Forces.

Our objectives were to inform veterans and their dependents of the services that are

available to them and to provide information about The American Legion and who we

are and what we do.

We invited representatives from John Dingell VA Hospital to explain their mission

and to inform those present the help they can receive through the VA.  Michigan

Veterans Affairs Agency sent a representative to inform Veterans about the goals of

their agency and to pass out information about how the MVAA intended to help

veterans navigate the myriad of services available to Michigan Veterans.

Department of Michigan Service Officers were on hand to take on the spot claims

from Veterans, provide status on existing claims and to answer questions that

veterans or their dependents might have concerning Veteran Benefits.  The Director of  Wayne County Veterans Service attended with information on the Michigan

Veterans Trust Fund and the Wayne County Soldier & Sailor relief fund.  Both of

which provides emergency funds to Wayne County Veterans and their dependents in

time of need.
